Handa Opera Rises From Harbour-side to Harbour Skies on Sydney Harbour Bridge
Wednesday 11th April at dawn, for one intimate performance, Sydney’s prestigious harbour-side Handa Opera took to a harbour-skies stage 134 metres above the water, at the summit of the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
Following a bucket list Climb of the Australian icon, Julie Lea Goodwin, currently starring in Opera Australia’s La Bohème on Sydney Harbour, sang Musetta’s Waltz in a private appearance for 10 lucky guests.
Taking in an uninterrupted 360 degree view of the city and its surrounds as the sun rose behind the eastern coastline, the climbers listened to one of Puccini’s greatest arias performed by one of Australia’s most highly acclaimed opera singers.
Julie Lea Goodwin said, “It was amazing to have climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge and to perform one of my favourite arias from La Bohème on top of such an iconic Australian landmark. I have also performed it in another iconic landmark, the Sydney Opera House and at Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour. So I feel like now that I’ve done all three I’m not sure where I’ll sing it next. It was an incredible morning.”
Lee-Anne Lentfer, one of the guests, said, “For my mum and I to have climbed the Sydney Harbour Bridge together and to have had the unique opportunity to enjoy another quintessential Sydney activity at the top, a beautiful opera performance, has been magical.”
Climbers on the Sydney Harbour Bridge have had the opportunity to watch to watch the fireworks each night of the season of this annual spectacle since 2012 when the Handa Opera on Sydney Harbour became the first opera in Australia to be staged on a tailor-made stage built over the water.
Today an alternative iconic stage over the water gave Climbers the chance to preview a performance from the prestigious outdoor opera and conquer one of Australia’s engineering masterpieces.
The top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge is one of the world’s most romantic locations and has seen more than 5,000 engagements, countless anniversary celebrations and 30 weddings.
BridgeClimb offers a truly memorable experience, perfect for special occasions, family adventures, team building and corporate events. Information on and tickets for all BridgeClimb experiences are available at www.bridgeclimb.com or call (02) 8274 7777.
