Rotary & BridgeClimb Smash 2 Bridge Records
On 30 May 2014, new Bridge history was made. More than 300 Rotary members from all over the world took over the arches of the Sydney Harbour Bridge en masse to climb for their cause – End Polio Now. In doing so they smashed two world records on the Sydney Harbour Bridge.
The Bridge, famously grey, was a kaleidoscope of colour as every Rotarian proudly waved a flag in recognition of each country or territory where Rotary operates worldwide. Yep, that’s 278 flags on top of the iconic Sydney Harbour Bridge. It's a new Guinness World Record and it was hard to miss the spectacular sight of it.
This climb, which recorded 340 climbers on the Bridge at once, also broke the Bridge record for the number of climbers on the top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge (previously set by Oprah).
On a beautiful Sydney day, people lined the famous arch of the Bridge from the summit, almost all the way down the eastern arch.
Most of the climbers came from amongst more than 18,000 Rotary members from over 150 countries expected to attend Rotary International’s 105th annual convention at Sydney Olympic Park on 1-4 June 2014.
