89 Years Young & 120 Climbs on the Famous Iron Lung
Instilled from a young age, Lloyd’s adventurous personality and genuine fascination with the engineering feat has given him a special appreciation for the Sydney Harbour Bridge. From age 5, when the Bridge first opened, Lloyd has admired the Bridge from all angles; he has sailed under it, walked across it, and flown over it – little did he know at that age, climbing the Bridge would be his greatest achievement yet.
84 years on, Lloyd Poulton is certainly “…not done with [his] childhood yet!”
On Tuesday 20th September, the sun was shining, the skies were blue, and the Harbour was glistening as if Sydney were aware of the approaching summit celebration on top of the Bridge. Lloyd took in the famous Harbour view at every step as he journeyed his way to the top to celebrate his 120th Climb.
Lloyd remarked at the top of the Bridge, 134 metres above the harbour, “Many people say I’m living a second childhood, but my wife tells me I haven’t left my first one yet.”
Lloyd and BridgeClimb have shared many milestones since he first stepped foot on the famous “Iron Lung”. For Lloyd’s 87th birthday, he celebrated his 87th Climb, and on his 100th Climb BridgeClimb commemorated their highest achieving Bridge Master with a golden plaque, formally known as “Lloyd Poulton’s Step.”
When he isn’t climbing bridges, he splits his time between his homes at Edgecliff and Nowra and is always on the go sailing yachts, piloting small air crafts and even bungee jumping.
