Five Reasons to Climb In Winter

Sydney is a city where the city and surf collide; where you can enjoy a cooling dip at Bondi in the height of summer (slap on some sunscreen!), or a refreshing surf at Manly in the midst of winter. Now, when we say winter, we do mean our winter. We get to enjoy mild temps of 10-20C (61-48F) during our cooler months, with this time of year considered one of Sydney’s most enjoyable seasons.

Here’s why:

1. PLEASANT TIME TO BE OUTDOORS

Unlike our northern hemisphere friends, Sydney isn’t touched by Jack Frost or looming clouds of doom as winter descends across the city. In fact, the city enjoys less rain in winter on average than in summer and autumn. The days can be full of warming sunshine (rather than searing sun) and bright bluebird skies.

2. SPECTACULAR SUNSETS

Sydneysiders are spoiled for sunsets. As the air becomes clear and crisp, it allows more light to travel through the atmosphere to produce a vibrant display of colour in the skies above. Just sit back and enjoy the show.

3. ENJOY SYDNEY LIKE A LOCAL

With the draw of the New Year’s Eve fireworks, December and January continue to be on the most popular times for visitors to flock to Sydney. After the summer days have passed and the visitors have departed, the city returns to its regular rhythm.

Visiting the Harbour City in the off peak months will give you the opportunity to really experience the city like Sydneysider – enjoy sipping a coffee in the sunshine of The Rocks’ alleyways, wander the impressive coastline on one of the city’s famous scenic walks, or take in the harbour when you don’t have to jostle for the perfect selfie possie in front of one of the country’s icons.

4. HAVE A WHALE OF A TIME

Winter is whale watching season in Sydney, with Humpbacks and Southern Right whales visible by boat or from the coastline if you’re got your eyes peeled. Whales and dolphins have even entered the harbour in recent years during winter, so be sure to keep your eyes peeled if you’re ascending the Bridge in winter!

5. SYDNEY’S OTHER FESTIVE SEASON

After you’ve got your bearings of the city from the top of the Bridge, venture out to the city’s many “little villages” to enjoy its festivals, markets and events. Some popular ones to keep an eye out for include Vivid Sydney, Aroma Coffee Festival, The Winter Festival, and Sydney Film Festival.
